Good advice on copywriting from Ken McCarthy

I’ve been an observer of Ken McCarthy’s for several years. Ken’s website is here. Today, I started following him on Twitter. Why did it take me so long? I have no idea.

Here’s Ken’s very astute take on being a successful copywriter. Writing words that sell goods or services is one of the most profitable “jobs” around. Check out what he has to say:

To be a successful copywriter (or to write good ads for your own business), you need to be as creative as a plumber.

No more, no less.

You need to know how to diagnose problems (sales problems), what tools to use and when, and how to link all the pipes (sales processes) together so that the water (prospect attention and action) flows in the direction you want it to flow.

Until you master the art of catching and holding attention – and then guiding action – nothing else will make a difference in your sales.

This is a timely thought from Ken. You see, today, I spent the first half of the day being a plumber. Diagnosing my house’s frozen pipe problems, learning it was at the well head, thawing the well head (plenty of cussing in between each part of this), fixing an exposed 1.5″ PVC pipe that should have been wrapped and protected, instead, cutting 2′ off of it, then capping it after applying purple primer and blue glue.

Now, I’m at my office, getting caught up, which includes writing a useful blog post.

Follow Ken’s advice. Learn the craft of writing copy.

Merry Christmas, too!
